First of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my dear Hubby. He is the best person that I know, and I am so glad that the Lord gave him to me.
Last time I talked about how we met to lead up to this post. We got engaged 9 months after we started dating. I know that is quick for most people but since we had already been friends for a long time, we skipped the getting to know you part of dating.
We got engaged on his birthday. I was totally convinced that he was going to propose on his birthday until about a week before it happened. My friend talked me out of it. She kept saying, “That would be too predictable for him to do it on that date.” I believed her. She was in on it.
We hung out the entire day and it was jammed packed with plans. I couldn’t help but be bummed out the entire day. Hubby picked up on it and kept asking me if I was okay. It wasn’t like I could say, “No, because I thought you were going to propose today…” Sorry I was a Debbie Downer on that day, Hubby!
Quick note:
Let me give you reasons why I should have been suspicious:
- Hubby didn’t want to go to watch OU’s home game. We rarely miss them.
- He insisted that I get a manicure/pedicure. On HIS birthday.
- There are two reasons why this is important: One is because I told him once that I hoped that when we got engaged that I had pretty fingernails. That way, when I took a picture of my hand with a shiny ring it would like it belonged there. The other reason is because I would never let him touch my feet. I had just finished up my last season of soccer and soccer doesn’t make one’s feet too nice. He had bought me a gift card as a gift for wrapping up my last season of college soccer. You’ll understand why the feet thing is important later.
We were at what I thought was the end of the day, watching the OU game on TV when Kyle gets a phone call from the music pastor at our church. There’s an “emergency” at the church that has to be done that night, and Kyle is the only one that can fix it because the normal guy is sick. I really didn’t want to get up. I was mumbling and groaning about it, but I finally tagged along.
When we get to the church, we walked into the sanctuary and the whole isle was lit with candles. I, ever the bright one, asked, “Why are all these candles lit?” It didn’t hit me until I looked up on the stage and saw that it too was lit up with candles, with one chair sitting in the spotlight. Kyle asked me to go sit in the chair on the stage and got out his guitar. He started to play our song and sing it to me (You and Me by Lifehouse)! It was amazing. He had just been learning how to play guitar and learned our song without me knowing.
Then he got out his bible and read from John 13. Here’s a couple excerpts:
v:3-5 “Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with a towel that was wrapped around him.
v: 12-17 “When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. ‘Do you understand what I have done for you”‘ he asked them. ‘You call me “Teacher” and “Lord” and rightly so, for that is what I Am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. It tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.’”

Hubby told me that he thought Christ set the perfect example of servanthood. He told me that he wanted to serve me and he wanted to show me. He got out a basin of water and a towel and washed my feet. Then he told me why he loved me- for my joy in the Lord and my faith, and for the encouragement that I am to him. And he told me he wanted to protect me, love me, and serve me for the rest of our lives.
Then he said the words I had been waiting for, “Missy, will you marry me?” And I said, “YES!”

My hubby's b-day was just yesterday! We were married young at 19 years old. We've been married for over eight years now and it has been so neat watching him grow into the man he is today and getting to be apart of it and growing with him. What a great blessing to grow old with the one you love.
